The concept is designed as a jetty-moored, non-propelled floating barge equipped with six independent 5 MW “Data-in-a-Box” modules. Each module integrates IT equipment, cooling systems, power distribution, and supporting infrastructure within a compact modular arrangement. This design enables flexible deployment, scalable capacity, and continuous operation in coastal and offshore environments.

As demand for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and edge computing continues to grow, floating data centers are attracting increasing attention as an alternative solution for regions facing land, power, and cooling constraints. By placing data infrastructure on floating marine platforms, the concept can make use of offshore space, seawater cooling, and modular construction methods to support next-generation digital growth.

Seatrium’s design combines its experience in offshore engineering, marine energy systems integration, and complex project execution. The floating data center concept uses natural seawater cooling and flexible offshore siting to improve energy efficiency and deployment adaptability. Building on the 30 MW reference design, Seatrium is also advancing a 100 MW floating data center concept, indicating a pathway toward larger-scale deployment.

Bureau Veritas independently assessed the technical feasibility of the concept. The review covered the fundamental design against applicable BV rules, international standards, and relevant regulatory requirements. Key areas of assessment included the general arrangement, cooling process flow, preliminary stability, marine systems, and major safety considerations.

The Approval in Principle provides an independent technical validation at the concept stage and supports the project’s progression toward more detailed design and development. It also demonstrates the important role of classification societies in helping emerging offshore technologies identify risks, establish compliance pathways, and build confidence before implementation.

The collaboration between Bureau Veritas and Seatrium reflects the growing importance of cross-sector innovation between the maritime, offshore, energy, and digital technology industries. It also provides a valuable example of how classification and technical assurance can support the safe and scalable development of future marine engineering solutions.
