Recently, China Securities Journal published an article titled “Green Chains Gain Momentum: Central SOEs Accelerate Low-Carbon Transformation of Green Supply Chains,” highlighting the achievements of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) in carbon footprint management.

Focusing on the carbon footprint accounting of ship products throughout their entire life cycle, CSSC has developed the shipbuilding industry’s first set of accounting rules and database. This has effectively promoted coordinated emission reduction across both upstream and downstream sectors of the supply chain. CSSC’s related practices have been successfully included in the Report on the Development of Green and Low-Carbon Supply Chains of Central State-Owned Enterprises (2025), providing valuable experience that can be replicated and promoted across the industry.

In 2024, CSSC took the lead in launching pilot work on carbon footprint accounting for ship products. In 2025, this work was gradually expanded to cover its major ship types, enabling CSSC to establish a full-process carbon footprint management system ahead of others in the industry. The Group also studied and formulated carbon footprint accounting standards for ship products, filling gaps in relevant technologies and standards within the sector.

Adhering to the principle of “building green ships and building ships in a green way,” CSSC has integrated carbon management into the entire supply chain process. It continues to promote coordinated emission reduction across the whole value chain and systematically enhance the low-carbon development level of the industrial chain.

CSSC’s carbon footprint work demonstrates the responsibility and commitment of a central state-owned enterprise. Looking ahead, CSSC will continue to deepen research on carbon footprint accounting, further strengthen the development of green supply chains, and comprehensively support the green and high-quality transformation of the shipbuilding industry with carbon management as a fundamental driver.
